"Let me clear up a lot of the assumptions about the fireworks display. I the Fire Chief had to make a decision about 3 1/2 months ago when you have to put an order in for the fireworks and also when we were very very dry and the weather outlook at that time was showing drought conditions were very high."

"Nobody could predict we were going to get almost 8 inches of rain in a 4 day period. So I made the decision not to put on a fireworks show. The decision is not to make it that way indefinitely, so that is false information, it’s just  this year. This is a year to year decision. Fireworks do not store for years and then can be used. That adds another safety issue."

"For the fundraising side of the show it is done by the Chamber and that was great."

"For the shooting of a fireworks display not just anybody can do that. You have to have certified staff on site who can do that. There is a huge liability and insurance cost to have coverage for that. I know the history of the fireworks display here in La Junta and have been involved with it for many years but as I sit in the position of Chief of the Fire Department that has to make sure the rest of the Fire Protection District has the proper coverage  for services as well."

"If everyone would just call or ask me questions about this it would have been cleared up so much easier. If someone does not have all the information and puts assumptions out there, the answer can be put out there easier."

Thank you.
