American Solar Challenge Arrives at Bent's Old Fort
The University of Minnesota Solar Car Team has a healthy lead in the American Solar Challenge; they arrived at Bent's Old Fort in La Junta just after 6pm on Wednesday.
There was much discussion amongst event officials prior to the team's arrival concerning the 6:30pm driving deadline. The first arrivals beat the clock by about 15 minutes. Then they used their solar array to charge the car's batteries until the 8 pm deadline in preparation for tomorrow's laps around Southeast Colorado.
The other teams are spread between Colorado and Kansas and are as far behind as 109 miles, according to race officials.
Tomorrow teams can depart from Bent's Old Fort beginning at 2pm, until then the teams can make optional loops to add milage to their scores.
Solar vehicles will be on display for the public beginning at 9 am Thursday August 5th at Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site. It is free for the public to attend.
The front-running competitors will also be traveling around the Bent’s Fort area. Their route will lead them on 194, through Las Animas, then West on Hwy 50 to Las Junts through town and then back down 194 to Bent's Old Fort.
