Oliver John Alvarez, age 79, passed away peacefully, on Friday, September 16, 2022. He was born on September 6, 1943, to Oliver and Ruby Alvarez in Embudo, NM.
Johnny (OJ) graduated from Las Animas High School and attended Ontario Jr. College. He served in USAF for 23 years and retired from a second career with OSHA.
In his younger years, Johnny (OJ) enjoyed playing the saxophone, baseball, bowling, riding motorcycles, and in his retirement, traveling and playing golf.
He is survived by his wife, Cheryl Moore; former spouse, Joyce Stephenson; and their children, Shelley (Louis) Velez, Shawna Alvarez, and Sheri (Erick) Molina; stepchildren, Stephen (Cynthia) Moore, Jeffrey (Nicole) Moore; brother, Thomas L. Alvarez; sister, Regina Faye Alvarez; 13 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, along with nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Memorial Service will be held on Monday, October 17, 2022, at 11:30 a.m., at Fort Lyon National Cemetery, 15700 Co Rd HH, Las Animas, CO 81054, followed by a Celebration of Life at the VFW in Las Animas.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to one of his favorite charities, Wounded Warriors or the VFW in care of Horber Funeral Chapel, P.O. Box 431, Las Animas, CO 81054.
