Colorado State Troopers Increasing Patrols to Target Impaired Drivers
Three-Day Surge Enforcement Set for Bent, Crowley and Otero, Colorado
(COLO) – The Colorado State Patrol will conduct saturation patrols on Friday, January 12, 2024, through the early morning of Sunday, January 14, 2024. This operation is focused on impaired driving throughout Bent, Crowley, and Otero counties.
These Colorado counties have experienced 24 fatal or serious injury crashes over the last five years with the top four causal factors for these crashes being impaired driving, lane violations (weaving), inattentive to driving, and driving on the wrong side of the road. The deadliest times were Thursday through Sunday morning.
During this three-day, high-visibility enforcement operation beginning Friday, State troopers will be dedicated to the detection and apprehension of drivers who may be impaired by or otherwise under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or a combination of these substances. We will also increase enforcement on excessive speed, lane violations, and a lower tolerance on those driving "over the limit," both regarding alcohol and speed.
This operation intends to raise awareness and gain voluntary compliance from the motoring public to find designated drivers or abstain from drinking an alcoholic beverage, smoking or ingesting cannabis products, and then driving.
If you encounter a suspected impaired driver, the driver should be avoided by getting out of the way. Contact the Colorado State Patrol after you pull over by calling *CSP (*277), 719-544-2424 or 303-239-4501. Be prepared to provide the following information: vehicle description, license plate number, location and direction of travel, driver description, and the driving behavior being demonstrated. All emergency calls can be made to 9-1-1.
Participating Agencies:
- Colorado State Patrol – Statewide DUI Team
- Colorado State Patrol – Troop 2C
Troopers continue to take a low-tolerance approach to the top fatal crash factors, including impaired driving while launching a yearlong campaign called “Drive Safe.” This campaign reminds people to plan for a sober ride, drive the speed limit and control their lane position based on their current driving environment.
