La Junta High School Choir Went to Gunnison!

By Dineah Moreno

On February 29, 2024. Five members of the La Junta High School Choir went to the Western State Honor Choir at Western State University in Gunnison. Three students are in the mixed choir and two girls are in the women's choir. The group stayed in Gunnison for three days and two nights, returning on March 2nd.

Students auditioned for this prestigious choir in October, and they learned the results in the middle of December.  The auditions are a mixture of sight reading and singing Ta for the part that they sing alone. In January the students received the music. Teacher Kristin Langston played it for them to listen to a few times, then they started to practice.

The first day at Western Colorado University was an afternoon-long practice, and the second day was an all-day practice. The third day began with a morning practice then a dress rehearsal. After the dress rehearsal, singers got a break for lunch. After lunch was the whole concert, beginning with the directors, the mixed choir, and the women's choir following. The women’s choir performed two spiritual songs from Kenya and four songs in English. The Kenyan songs were my favorite because the director made us dance.

NAfME(National Association for Music Education) is a music sorority on Western State Campus--members are instrumental in putting Western State Honor Choir together. They will also give a tour of the campus and introduce students to their choir members.
