The Impact of Social Media: Exploring the Pros and Cons

By Kaylee Hernandez

Social media emerges as a powerful current shaping our interactions, perceptions and daily lives. With every scroll and click, we encounter a spectrum of influences. It can be fun to use social media, but there is a dark side to social media that people don't normally care about.

Erika Rodriguez is my mom who works at Inspiration Field. She thinks social media affects the way we communicate because a lack of face-to-face contact with people can cause miscommunication and misunderstandings.

Social media can also cause people to create unrealistic expectations of reality; this can cause depression for some people because they are comparing their lives to social media.

In addition, people spend too much time on social media and they are less productive. Social media can become addicting and it can interfere with jobs or education. It’s also quite easy for younger users to access inappropriate content.

Gabby Sanchez, a junior at La Junta High School, believes social media does have a big effect on our mental health and well being. Constant exposure to other people's lives can lead to comparison and FOMO (Fear of Missing Out). Social media can also affect our sleep patterns, decrease productivity, and, ironically, it can even lead us to feel lonely and cause isolation.

Social media has played a significant role in shaping our understanding of reality with the constant stream of formation and content, it has become a primary source of news and information for many people. However, this abundance of information can also lead to misinformation and the spread of fake news.

Even though social media can cause problems, it is not without its up side. It helps people to stay connected with news. It can be educational too--reading different articles or watching videos on social media that are informational!

Social media has made it easier then ever to connect with others regardless of distance or time zones. We can stay in touch with family and friends, and engage in conversations instantly because of social media.

Social media can have both positive and negative effects. On the positive side it allows us to associate with others online and share experiences but on the more negative side it can lead to stress, anxiety or cyberbullying and the spread of misinformation. It's important to be mindful of our social media use.
