Avery Trujillo of Fruita Named 2023 Colorado State Patrol Trooper of the Year

(Colorado) – Each year, the Colorado State Patrol selects a trooper who best demonstrates outstanding work performance, initiative, leadership, character, and integrity and whose actions or performance significantly exceed expectations if they exemplify the Colorado State Patrol’s core values of Honor, Duty, and Respect.

The Colorado State Trooper of the Year is Trooper Avery Trujillo.

Throughout 2023, Trooper Avery Trujillo consistently demonstrated outstanding work performance, initiative, and leadership. His nomination highlighted three specific incidents to support this honor. He is based out of the Fruita Troop Office.

On April 13, 2023, Trooper Trujillo was dispatched to a single-vehicle rollover crash involving seven teenagers. He was first on-scene and reported one occupant in critical condition, while four others were on the ground seriously injured. As he checked on the occupants, he noticed the responding EMS members were incredibly overwhelmed. Trooper Trujillo immediately stepped in, using his previous EMS experience. He advised the EMS dispatcher that multiple advanced life support ambulances were needed and requested that multiple EMS jurisdictions respond to ensure enough resources to treat everyone on the scene.

On May 1, 2023, while assisting with a DUI crash, he observed two car seats for young children. Trooper Trujillo took the initiative to have a welfare check conducted at the driver’s residence. To their surprise, they found a four-year-old autistic child and a two-year-old at home by themselves. An ambulance then came to the home, followed by Child Protective Services, who took custody of the children and turned them over to their aunt.

Finally, on July 7, 2023, Trooper Trujillo assisted with another DUI crash. He learned that the intoxicated driver involved was supposed to take baby formula to his family in Glade Park. Trooper Trujillo drove to Glade Park to conduct a welfare check. When he arrived, he found the mom and baby were without water and formula and were stranded without a vehicle for multiple hours. Trooper Trujillo drove back into town, purchased water and formula with his personal money, and retrieved the car seat and stroller from their crashed vehicle at the tow yard. He then drove those items back to the stranded mom and baby. They were most grateful for Trooper Trujillo's great lengths to care for them.
