Rocky Ford Police VS Illegal Street Racers

About 10pm, 30th June, 2024, Chief McDonagh was patrolling the eastern end of Rocky Ford, when he heard and observed a silver BMW M3 and a black Ford Mustang racing each other, and in the process of exiting the Rocky Ford city limits, heading eastbound on Elm Avenue, continuing onto US50 towards Swink.

Chief McDonagh continued to observe the vehicles as they engaged in a 'speed contest', in violation of Colorado Revised Statute 42-4-1105(1)(a), while rounding up additional resources to assist in performing a traffic stop on both offending drivers, at the same time.

Shortly afterwards, the silver BMW made a u-turn and started to head back towards Rocky Ford and was stopped by Chief McDonagh.

The registration details of the Mustang were forwarded to Colorado State Patrol, Otero County Sheriff's Office and La Junta Police Department via police radio (you can't beat Motorola in a race 🏁)

A short time later, the Mustang was stopped by La Junta Police Department, in La Junta. The Otero County Sheriff's Office and Colorado State Patrol (CSP Troop 2C - Lamar/LaJunta) assisted on scene until Chief McDonagh completed paperwork with the driver of the BMW and was able to make his way to La Junta.

The 21 year male old driver of the BMW was issued a summons to attend the Rocky Ford Municipal Court, charged with 'speed contest'.

The 20 year old male driver of the Mustang was issued a summons to attend the Otero County Court for 'speed contest' and driving a motor vehicle while his license was under restraint (suspended).

Engaging in a 'speed contest' is a serious traffic violation in Colorado, carrying a 12 point penalty, and accompanied by a summons to attend court. It can also result in the court immobilizing your vehicle.
