Sheriff Aaron Shiplett Appointed to Colorado POST Board by Governor Jared Polis

On June 29th 2024, the Baca County Sheriff’s Office was notified that Baca County Sheriff Aaron Shiplett was appointed by Governor Jared Polis to serve on the Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Board for a term of three years.  Sheriff Shiplett began this journey after being asked to apply to the POST Board by the POST Director Erik Bourgerie in April of 2024.  After completing the application process, the Post Director and a member of the Colorado Attorney General’s team conducted interviews and chose their top three candidates to proceed to the Governor’s desk for review.  The Governor then picked from the three finalists and chose to appoint Sheriff Shiplett to the Board.

The POST Board is made up of 24 appointees from around the state.  Colorado Revised Statutes require the appointees to  include the Colorado Attorney General, Colorado Director of Public Safety, Special Agent in Charge of the Denver FBI,  POST Director, six active Sheriffs, six active Chiefs, three active Peace Officers (rank of Sergeant or below), and five non-law enforcement public members.  The POST Board documents and manages the certification and training of all active peace officers and reserve peace officers working in Colorado.  POST provides continuing training on emerging issues, distributes grants to law enforcement agencies, and investigates civil and criminal violations of POST’s certification statutes.  It also oversees and approves all Colorado law enforcement academies, certifies and de-certifies peace officers, audits law enforcements agencies Use of Force policies, along with several other duties.

Sheriff Shiplett is excited and honored to represent Baca County and Southeast Colorado on the POST Board and he plans on trying to bring a little country logic to the big city way of performing law enforcement functions.  The sheriff hopes, that by serving on the POST board, he can shed light on the plight of small county law enforcement and the challenges we face.  Serving on the POST Board is a non-compensated appointment and will not, in any way, detract from Sheriff Shiplett’s moral, ethical, and statutory obligations and commitment to the citizens of Baca County and this community.
