Springfield Police Department Announces Success in Ensuring a Safe County Fair and Addresses Scooter Compliance Issues

August 5, 2024 – Chief C. Griffin of the Springfield Police Department is pleased to report that the recent County Fair was held without any reported alcohol or drug-related motor vehicle crashes, injuries, or fatalities. This achievement comes as a result of a combined effort to address a troubling trend of impaired driving during and around fair time, which has historically led to serious accidents and injuries.

In light of the recent, tragic loss of a young man whose life was taken by impaired driving the Springfield Police Department, in collaboration with the Colorado State Patrol and the Baca County Sheriff’s Office committed to a heightened enforcement strategy. This was done not only to honor his memory but to protect our community and prevent further tragedies.

“The loss of this remarkable young man was a wake-up call for all of us,” said Chief Griffin. “While the emotional impact of his passing was profound, it was not enough to prevent others from making dangerous decisions behind the wheel. We knew we had to act decisively to ensure that this year’s County Fair would be free from the devastation caused by impaired driving.”

Through increased patrols and rigorous traffic enforcement, combined with the community’s responsible decisions to seek alternative transportation options while intoxicated, we successfully avoided any drug or alcohol-related traffic incidents during the fair. This collaborative success underscores the effectiveness of proactive law enforcement and community engagement.

“We understand that the presence of extra patrols may have been met with mixed reactions,” Chief Griffin acknowledged. “However, the primary goal of our enforcement efforts is to ensure public safety. While not everyone may appreciate the approach, the results speak for themselves. Public safety must come first, and we are committed to that priority.”

In addition to addressing impaired driving and speeding violations, the Springfield Police Department has also noted a rise in the use of scooters on public streets and roadways. Many individuals appear to be using scooters as a means to circumvent driver's license requirements. Over the weekend, officers made numerous contacts with scooter operators, informing them of the legal requirements for scooters over 50cc, which include having insurance, a valid driver's license, and a motorcycle endorsement. Operators are also required to comply with all registration requirements.

“Ensuring that all road users are compliant with the law is essential for maintaining safety on our streets,” Chief Griffin emphasized. “We will continue to address these issues and enforce the regulations necessary to keep our community safe.”

The Springfield Police Department appreciates the cooperation of the community in making the County Fair a safe and enjoyable event. We remain committed to the safety and well-being of all residents and will continue to work diligently to address any concerns and enforce necessary regulations.
