Bent County, CO

On Sunday, August 4, 2024, at 09:01 pm, deputies attempted to contact a vehicle for a traffic infraction on Highway 50 at or near the 405. Upon investigation, the vehicle was identified as stolen out of Lamar and connected to a homicide investigation out of Colorado Springs.

The suspect vehicle fled east towards Lamar, leading deputies on a high-speed pursuit. The chase continued east to County Road 27.3 and JJ, where the vehicle turned south towards the river. The suspect vehicle then drove off an embankment into the river bottom, becoming wedged between two large tamarisk trees.

The suspect fled on foot into the river bottom.

Drones, a bloodhound tracking dog, and a Colorado State patrol search plane, were deployed to the area to assist in the search. The suspect, Roger Vargas JR (DOB 5/24/1988) was subsequently taken into custody and transported to Prowers Medical Center for medical clearance. After receiving clearance, the suspect was transported to the Bent County Jail, booked on charges of vehicular eluding. Additionally, the suspect had a felony parole warrant for escape and parole violation.

We remind the public that all suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
