Letter to the Editor: Prowers Coroner Recall Effort Update

First, let me say to the entire Bond family I am sincerely sorry for your loss. I did not personally know your family member but have been told numerous times what a joy he brought to so many.  Any loss of family is difficult and saddens us greatly but the imprint they leave on our lives is lasting.  Having the honor to have met you I can see that you are good people and I believed you deserved better than what was dealt you.

When this situation was brought to my attention I could not in good conscience sit idly by and not at least try to get more information to right an ethical and professional wrong.  After attending Prowers County Commissioner meetings and being amazed by the turn of events I stepped up and called for an informational meeting of concerned citizens. Said meeting was low in numbers but I believed there was strong community effort to try and right this wrong.

Much investigation of recall procedures was put in place and Doug Thrall and I met with Prowers County Commissioner Ron Cook and subsequently with Mr. Donagan himself.  Information from multiple sources brought forth long standing moral and ethical issues associated with Mr.. Dunagan in his role as our elected Coroner.

A second meeting was called and it was determined that to have a strong recall statement we needed more evidence based facts and more time to properly make this recall effort happen for the good of the Prowers County citizens.

Unfortunately, a few days after that second meeting I tested positive with a severe case of Covid and subsequently viral pneumonia. Due to preexisting cancer I was hospitalized and put on home health care for the past 23 days.

Hopefully I have seen the worst of this but in this process  I sent out a message asking that committee members continue to provide informational facts to Doug Thrall for him to draft the recall position statement.

Sadly, I have found that the recall effort was not, in my opinion, a true community betterment effort.  The movement seemed to have been yesterdays news and has been left as a "hot button" of the moment push.  More individual and personal issues than truly standing for those that have lost their voice.  As a trained psychologist and counselor I have found this to happen far to often.

I stand by my belief that this is or should be an honorable elected community position but has not been treated as such nor do I believe it is the last time such unethical behavior will occur.  For the sake of each of you and your family members I pray you are not next.

I am sorry for the length of this message but I needed to make it abundantly clear that one or two people can't make something of this magnitude happen nor should they.  If as a community we do not stand for what is right we are destined to repeat it at ALL levels.

With all this "rambling" being said I am going to pull my efforts on the recall effort and wish you all well.

Stand for what is right but you must take a dedicated stand and believe in RIGHT IS RIGHT!

I welcome any and all comments on this matter and/or my message.

NOTHING CHANGES IF NOTHING CHANGES!

Thank you
Cindy "Red" Vigil
