Attention, Bent County residents! The 83rd Bent County Harvest Show is coming up soon! Make those last stitches, do some preserving, finish art projects, round up some collectibles, do some handicrafts or woodworking, and start making some decisions on produce, crops, and flowers. Let’s see if we can fill up those classes!

This year’s Harvest Show will be Oct. 1-3 at St. Mary’s Hall, 714 Elm Ave. in Las Animas.

The Harvest Show is open to all Bent County residents, students who attend Bent County schools, and Bent County 4-H members.

Exhibitors are urged to pick up a Harvest Show book from local businesses or at the Bent County Extension Office, 1499 Ambassador Thompson Blvd., Las Animas. The books contain the rules, schedule, and a list of all the divisions and classes.

All entries must be made by the exhibitor. There is a maximum of one entry per exhibitor in each class, and entry deadlines must be met. All exhibits must have been completed since the last Harvest Show, and no exhibits from previous years can be shown, except for potted plants. There is no cost for entries. Exhibits must be entered by a division superintendent.

Divisions include Clothing Construction; Needle Craft; Fancywork; Food Preservation; Baked Goods; Home Furnishings; Handicrafts and Woodworking; Collections, Antiques, and Collectible Items; Art; Photography; Flowers; Crops; Produce Decorating; Vegetables and Fruits; and Educational Booths.

Please consult the Harvest Show Book for more information, including specific rules for certain divisions, as items will be disqualified if the specifications are not met.

For example, canned foods require specific labelling, including how the foods were processed and where the processing information was obtained, and the use of standard canning jars.

Art and photography entries require the use of frames with picture framing wire securely attached. Saw-toothed hangers will not be allowed. Matted art will be hung with binder clips provided at the show. It is suggested that if exhibitors cannot provide properly framed photos that they just use mats, with the art securely affixed to the mat. (See rules for junior art).

In the flower division, all entries must be ready to enter upon arrival and no arranging will be allowed. Exhibitors must provide their own vases.

Booth entries must also abide by the rules in the book.

Other divisions also have rules, so it is best to consult the Harvest Show book before bringing your items to the show.

Premiums will be paid for first to third place in each class ($3, $2, and $1, respectively). Grand champion in each division will receive $20, and reserve grand champion will receive $10. Premiums will be paid at 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3. Premiums not claimed by Nov. 1 will be forfeited.

Questions may be directed to the Bent County Extension Office, (719) 456-0764
