Rocky Ford Firefighters Battle Challenging Structure Fire; Residents Safe but Displaced

This evening at approximately 4:34 pm we were paged for a structure fire at 410 South Third Street. Upon arrival all persons self-evacuated and we found roof line and eaves with moderate to heavy smoke showing.

Mutual aid was requested from Manzanola Volunteer Fire Department. Entry was made inside to try to extinguish fire from inside. Firefighters had a difficult fight interior due to multiple ceilings.  This made it impossible to extinguish directly from interior, so it was decided to vent a hole on the roof exterior to cool off the attic space and make extinguishment efforts easier.

Vent holes were initiated on roof operations and fire was vented then extinguished.  Cause of fire is from faulty knob and tube style electrical wiring grounded out igniting insulation throughout the attic space.

Damage was significant in the attic space and significant water damage interior from extinguishment efforts.  American Red Cross was contacted, and Marty Lee with the Ministerial Alliance was contacted to assist the displaced. All fire units cleared scene at approximately 1900 hrs.
