Springfield Police Crack Down on Illegal Racing and Reckless Driving: "No Warnings, Just Consequences"

The Springfield Police Department has observed increasing evidence of illegal racing, burnouts, and reckless driving on the streets and highways in and around Springfield. This behavior is not only dangerous but also completely unacceptable. Let us be clear: this will not be tolerated.

Penalties for Racing and Reckless Driving

Under Colorado law, 42-4-1105, the penalties and points for racing and burnouts are severe and can far exceed those for a DUI. Violations include:

Racing: 12-point violation — Enough to revoke your license outright.

Burnouts: 5-point violation.

Reckless Driving: 8-point violation.

Being charged and convicted of one or more of these offenses can — and likely will — result in the revocation of your driver’s license. These are not minor infractions. They have serious, long-term consequences.

Criminal Penalties

Beyond points against your license, these actions are considered traffic misdemeanors. If you are caught and convicted of engaging in any of these reckless behaviors:

You CAN and LIKELY will be taken to jail.

Your vehicle CAN and LIKELY will be towed.

These penalties are in place for a reason: to protect our community and keep our streets safe.

Message from the Springfield Police Department

We, along with the community, are tired of people treating our streets like a race track. Illegal racing and reckless driving put everyone at risk, including drivers, pedestrians, and other innocent road users.

Consider this your final warning. Moving forward, no warnings will be given, and offenders will face the full consequences of their actions. Remember, peddling a bicycle sucks.
