Driving Too Fast for Conditions

Four Colorado State Troopers struck in three days

(COLO) - Although no longer "early in the winter driving season," Colorado drivers struggled to adjust their driving behavior and reduce their speed, causing numerous traffic snarls and crashes. As Colorado State Troopers, responded to assist a stranded motorist and handle traffic crashes, on four separate incidents a secondary crash occurred when drivers failed to slow down or move over.

At approximately 7:15 p.m., a Colorado State Trooper attempted to contact a driver on Southbound I-25 near the academy scenic overlook in Colorado Springs for not using headlights as required. As the vehicle, was pulling over, the driver struck the end cap of the guardrail. Her vehicle spun back into the interstate, colliding with the Patrol vehicle. The trooper had no injuries. The other motorist was taken to a local hospital for unknown extent of injuries. This driver was arrested for DUI and careless driving related to the crash. The Colorado Springs Police Department is investing the crash. All further inquiries, should be forwarded to Colorado Springs Police Department Public Affairs.

At 9:03 a.m. a Colorado State Patrol vehicle was struck from behind while it was stopped blocking the left lane of eastbound I-70, Mile Post 105 (between Rifle and Glenwood Springs) for a previous crash.

The highway was closed until the crash could be relocated off the highway in New Castle. At approximately 10:11 a.m. the highway was reopened. The Colorado State Trooper and the driver of the vehicle who struck her patrol car, reported no injuries.

At 1:36 a.m. on Southbound I-25, milepost 119, a Colorado State Patrol trooper was blocking a right hand lane on a motorist assist call with lights activated. The trooper was outside his vehicle setting up traffic cones for additional warning to oncoming traffic. A semi truck struck the side of the Patrol cruiser. No injuries were reported at this scene.

At 7:05 a.m., a Colorado State Trooper was working on multiple crashes and getting units in place for a safety closure at Northbound I-25 and East Palmer Divide Avenue due to poor visibility and icy road conditions. The cruiser was positioned on the right shoulder with lights activated. The trooper had just left his vehicle when two vehicles were approaching the scene. The first vehicle was struck from the second vehicle behind it striking into the Patrol cruiser. No injuries were reported at this scene. 

"When you drive you are responsible for adjusting your speed and space between vehicles based on real-time conditions," stated Col. Matthew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. "Emergency responders, tow truck drivers are out there in miserable conditions, to keep our roadway users safe and get traffic flowing. When you drive, you have their lives in your hands. Drive accordingly - slow down and move over."
