Crowley County Sheriff Condemns SB25-003 as Nation’s Worst Gun Law, Vows to Limit Enforcement
Last Week Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed into law Colorado Senate Bill SB25-003. At the stroke of his pen the Governor finalized the worst gun control law in the United States. After August 2026 you can no longer purchase many common semi-auto rifles unless you are willing to:
$ Pay for a criminal background check.
$ Apply for a firearms safety course eligibility card (which you must also pay for).
$ Provide the results of that background check to your local Sheriff, who must submit your personal information into a state database.
If your local Sheriff decides you should possess an eligibility card, the Sheriff may issue that eligibility card. Notice I said MAY. This law gives the Sheriff the authority to decide if you can exercise your constitutional rights.
If in the Sheriff's infinite wisdom, he/she sees fit to issue an eligibility card, you can now try and find the classes you must take to allow you the privilege of buying your rifle. As of now the law reads that you will have to take either two or three classes and pay for them of course. I have heard a preliminary cost of $200 per class is likely.
Ok so you have jumped through all the hoops and been a good citizen and complied with all these requirements. Get ready, you must do so every five years, and I can still decide you should not have your rifle.
Our constitutional rights do not allow any one person or the state government the power to revoke them. Our civil rights are just that RIGHTS not privileges given to us by the Colorado Legislature. Our rights were given to us by GOD and codified in the law of the land by our founding fathers.
Rest assured that as long as I am your Sheriff you have nothing to fear from my office in the unconstitutional authority given me by our Legislature. I will have to comply with much of this law but only what I must do to allow citizens to continue to purchase their firearms.
I am hopeful that this law will not stand the scrutiny of the courts, but only time will tell. I would advise everyone to think clearly about what is happening to your rights every time the legislature is in session in Denver and vote accordingly.
