Shots Fired in Las Animas: Bent County Deputies Arrest Kenneth O’Connor, Recover Firearm with Help from K9 NUKE

On August 3, 2025, at approximately 8:53 p.m., deputies with the Bent County Sheriff’s Office responded to the 300 block of Maple Avenue in Las Animas following a report of shots fired.
Deputies quickly located the suspect, later identified as Kenneth O’Connor, who fled the scene on foot. During the attempted apprehension, O’Connor was observed running through a field and later attempting to enter a nearby residence. He was ultimately taken into custody, without incident.
K9 NUKE was deployed to conduct an article search and successfully located a firearm in a nearby field. Spent and unspent shell casings were also located by K9 Nuke throughout a 2 block radius.

Kenneth O’Connor was transported to the Bent County Jail and booked on the following charges:
Disorderly Conduct
Prohibited Use of Weapons
Reckless Endangerment
Introducing Contraband in the First Degree
Introducing Contraband in the Second Degree
Crime of Violation of a Protection Order
