Fatal Pedestrian Incident Shuts Down E-470 Northbound Near Gartrell Exit

(Arapahoe County, CO) - At approximately 11:42 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to a fatal pedestrian crash involving a semi on E-470 northbound near the Gartrell exit, 100 feet south of mile marker 9.

The initial investigation shows that the pedestrian, a 59-year-old male, was the driver of a Toyota SUV that had pulled over onto the right shoulder. The semi was traveling in the right lane of E-470 northbound. The pedestrian, who was standing in front of the SUV, moved into the right lane of the northbound lane of E-470 and was hit by the semi. The pedestrian suffered fatal injuries and died on the scene. The semi driver, a 49-year-old male, did not suffer any injuries and remained on scene for the investigation of the incident.

Investigators have determined that the deceased male party took his own life, and the incident does not indicate a traffic-related cause.

Northbound lanes of E470 were shut down during the investigation and cleanup of the crash scene; all but one lane were reopened at 2:27 p.m.

The Colorado State Patrol is handling the investigation.
