Springfield Police Charge Impaired Driver After 100+ MPH Stop; Second Driver Cited in Separate Incident

On the evening of 04/19/2026, an officer with the Springfield Police Department observed a vehicle traveling at a speed consistent with highway travel while on Main Street within the Town of Springfield. The officer attempted to initiate contact with the vehicle, which continued out of town and accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour for approximately seven miles.

The driver ultimately brought the vehicle to a stop and was compliant with the officer. During the contact, the officer observed indicators of impairment. Through the use of advanced roadside maneuvers, the officer determined the driver’s ability was impaired, likely due to marijuana use. The driver was charged with Reckless Driving, Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs or Alcohol or Both (DWAI), and charging related to the excessive speed.

A short time later, an officer was dispatched to a traffic complaint in the area of the 400 block of Bonair Street regarding a driver reportedly sliding a vehicle on a dirt roadway in an unsafe manner. The vehicle and driver were subsequently located in the Town of Walsh, SPD and BCSO officers responded and contacted the driver. Following the investigation, the driver was charged with Careless Driving.
