Fire Crews Battle Blaze at Abandoned Building Near 7th & Albert in Walsenburg

Firefighters responded early Friday morning to a structure near Albert Street and West 7th Street in Walsenburg, according to the Huerfano County Fire Protection District.

The fire was first reported around 1:45 a.m., with crews quickly arriving on scene to battle the blaze. By later Friday, fire crews were completing cleanup operations after successfully extinguishing the fire.

“Huerfano County Fire Protection District responded to a structure fire at 1:45am at Albert & West 7th St. Fire crews are completing clean up after putting out the blaze,” the department stated in an update.

The fire prompted significant road closures and emergency response activity throughout the area. Traffic remained shut down from 7th & Main to 7th & Albert while firefighters, law enforcement, and San Isabel Electric crews worked the scene.

Officials previously warned residents about downed power lines, increasing smoke, and possible impacts to nearby electrical infrastructure. Law enforcement officers also conducted door-to-door notifications to households that could potentially be affected if conditions worsened.

Authorities said no occupied structures were threatened during the incident.

The Huerfano County Government issued HCNotify Reverse 911 alerts to residents within a half-mile radius of the fire as a precaution. Officials encouraged residents to stay clear of the area and allow first responders room to operate safely.

The Huerfano County Fire Protection District also thanked the La Veta Fire Protection District for providing mutual aid assistance during the overnight emergency response.
