LA JUNTA, Colo. — The La Junta community came together on May 23, 2026, for the dedication of the new La Junta Police Memorial, a lasting tribute honoring the service, sacrifice, and legacy of local law enforcement officers and reserve officers who have served the community with dedication.

The heartfelt ceremony highlighted the power of community collaboration and remembrance, bringing together families, volunteers, city leaders, and local businesses in a shared mission to preserve the memory of those who wore the badge.

The vision for the memorial was spearheaded by the La Junta Police Department administration under the leadership of Chief Todd Quick, whose initiative helped transform the idea of a permanent police memorial into reality.

Several community partners played a vital role in the completion of the project. The Sign Shop made a generous contribution that helped bring the memorial to life, while Vanhook’s Garden Shop enhanced the space with beautiful landscaping that created a peaceful and respectful atmosphere.

A special tribute was paid to Reserve Officer Robert “Mac” Jones through the donation of a commemorative stone and bench provided by the Mac Jones family. The memorial honors Jones’ years of dedicated service to the La Junta community and serves as a place for reflection for family, friends, fellow officers, and residents.

The ceremony also recognized the efforts of the memorial dedication team, including Shirley Benz, spouse of former Reserve Officer Robert Benz, who served actively for approximately 25 years; Corrie Jones and Katy Jones, daughters-in-law of former Reserve Officer Mac Jones; and Melanie Jones, spouse of Mac Jones, who served actively for approximately 31 years.

Volunteers from Swink School were also thanked for their assistance with event setup and cleanup, demonstrating the strong community support behind the memorial project.

The newly dedicated memorial now stands as a symbol of honor, service, sacrifice, and community unity in La Junta, Colorado.
