Obituary
Robert Wayne Ballard, 79, passed away on May 9, 2026 at Southeast Colorado Hospital in Springfield, Colorado. He was born on November 6, 1946 in Eads, Colorado to R.L. Ballard and Dortha Ballard. He was the youngest of three children, having two older sisters, Carolyn Hicks and Sharon Seagler.
Wayne’s family moved to Hale Center, Texas in 1950. Wayne graduated from Hale Center High School in 1965 and then attended South Plains College on a track scholarship. He married Judy Shackelford at Cotton Center United Methodist Church on July 16, 1966. In 1967, he was drafted and served as a combat veteran, completing one tour of duty as a Rifleman in Vietnam. He received an Outstanding Achievement Award as a Rifleman in the 4th Infantry Division. Wayne completed his military service in 1969, after which he and Judy resumed their life together. Their daughter, Mitzi, was born in 1970.
In 1972, Wayne and Judy moved to Springfield, Colorado where Wayne worked alongside his father, doing what he loved most; farming. Their family welcomed another daughter, Melissa, in 1980.
Wayne married the love of his life, Patty, on July 20, 1994, and the two built a vibrant and joyful life together. They loved being on the farm, traveling, spending time with friends but most of all they loved laughing together. Wayne learned early on with Patty that laughter would prove to be the best medicine.
Wayne absolutely loved and adored all his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His heart overflowed with pride and joy whenever they were near and he cherished every moment spent with them. Whether it was sharing stories, creating lasting memories or simply enjoying their laughter, Wayne found his greatest happiness in being surrounded by his family.
Wayne also had a deep love for sports. He enjoyed watching his favorite teams, especially Texas Tech, as often as he could. Even more than that, he loved watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren play, taking great pride in every game, every effort and every moment they spent on the field or court.
Wayne will be deeply missed and remembered for his warm smile, caring heart and unwavering dedication to hard work. His kindness touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew him.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife, Patty; his daughters, Mitzi Jett (Don), Melissa Hegwood (Brent); son, Jared Leathers (Jennifer); his beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his brothers-in-law, Stan Seagler of Gruver, Texas and Stuart Eskew of Pritchett; his nieces and nephews; and his many cherished friends.
He was preceded in death by his immediate family, including his parents, Dortha and R.L. Ballard, and his sisters, Carolyn Hicks and Sharon Seagler.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Springfield EMS Association.
