Virginia Karlene Scofield of Colorado Springs, formerly of Rocky Ford, passed away on Friday, June 26, 2026 in Colorado Springs at the age of 85. Virginia Karlene Pitt was born April 1, 1941 in Kansas City, KS to Karl Buford Pitt and Addie Virginia (Ayles) Pitt. In 1951 Karlene was adopted by her step-dad, Hershel Cleaveland Yeargan, Jr. of La Junta. As a teenager Karlene worked at he mother’s café, Valley Drive Inn, in La Junta. In 1959, Karlene graduated from La Junta High School and then married Don Scofield of Rocky Ford. The couple moved to a farm 10 miles south of Rocky Ford, where they lived for 62 years. Daughter, Jenny, was born in 1960 and son, Jerre, was born in 1963. Karlene got to be a stay-at-home mom until both kids started school. Upon entering the workforce, Karlene worked at Valco, Inc. for 10 years, Frozen Foods for 2 years and The State Bank for 25 years before retiring.
Karlene was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, served on the Rocky Ford Chamber of Commerce Board, she was a member of the Garden Club, she also served on the Rocky Ford Library Board, she volunteered for hospice for 15 years, the food bank, the movie theater and most important was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rocky Ford, where she taught Sunday school, bible school as well as serving on other boards.
Karlene is survived by her daughter Jenny (Scott) VerBerkmoes, son Jerre Scofield, 3 grandchildren: Ashley (Andrew) Allen-Piña, Brittney VerBerkmoes and Cody VerBerkmoes. 3 great-grandchildren Alaina Allen-Piña, Adien Allen-Piña & Amelia Allen-Piña. She was preceded in death by her husband Don Scofield.
Bellwood Ustick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
