He lived a life of hard work, service, and support to those who surrounded him. He built community within the Maxwell family, near and far. He was born on 11/01/1949 in Cheboygan, Michigan, to Melvin and Gertrude Maxwell, where he lived with his family until entering college at Central Michigan University. Sam married Patricia McGowan on July 29, 1973, and they were married for 52 years.

They relocated to Colorado in 1977, raising their family and supporting their children and grandchildren through various endeavors. Sam valued providing for his family and passing on a legacy of love, strength, responsibility, and protection. Sam also served his community through his work at BOCES from 1977-1982, Arkansas Valley Community Center Board from 1982- 1998, and Community Housing Services in Denver from 1999-2013.

Sam then retired, spending time trip planning, traveling, and being a superfan of his grandchildren.
