Fire Update: On Sunday, gusty, erratic winds from passing thunderstorms increased fire behavior as firefighters battled to protect homes and property. Late in day, the fire made a wind-driven push to the north toward the Greenwood area and Wetmore. Firefighters worked through the night to protect structures, and they were able to establish fireline around Greenwood. Firefighters today are in position to engage flareups, while crews also work to finish dozer line in rugged terrain south of Wetmore.
Elsewhere on the fire, crews worked to add control line and hold their gains despite erratic winds caused by storms. On Siloam Road along the northeast edge firefighters mopped up hot spots while protecting structures, aided by water drops from helicopters. Further south along the eastern edge, hand crews, engines and helicopters were able to knock down a flareup near Even Road. In Rye on Sunday, firefighters mopped up hot spots near dozer line that was recently completed, as they work to secure the edge north of town. Dozer Crews are implementing line that will connect with dozer line coming out of Colorado City. Moving north along the western edge, firefighters protecting structures were actively engaged during flareups along Highway 165 near Middle Creek Sunday, and in the North Creek area along the fire's edge. Fire managers are also looking at implementing new dozer line from Bishop's Castle down into the Middle Creek Drainage.
Weather: Thunderstorms on Sunday produced strong winds, but very little moisture. More isolated storms are forecast over the fire area on Monday, increasing the chances of gusty outflow winds and lightning.
Fire Behavior: Vegetation remains extremely dry and may quickly ignite when flareups occur. Wind gusts from storm cells could increase active fire behavior in isolated areas. There is significant heat along the northeast edge near Wetmore, and in the southwest corner of the fire near Jackson Camp.
