Obituary

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Larry James Gaskill of Ordway, Colorado, who entered into rest on July 6, 2026. Larry touched countless lives throughout his journey, leaving an indelible mark as a devoted friend, cherished father, loving brother, and, above all, a beloved Papa.

Larry was born on July 30, 1949, at Penrose Medical Center in Colorado Springs; Larry was lovingly raised by his mother Thelma Miller and stepfather Guy Miller. His life was shaped by strong family bonds and a generous heart, which he extended to everyone around him.

Larry is survived by his children: Tiffany (Luis Altamirano) Gaskill, David (Teresa) Gaskill of Leadville, Colorado, and Stephanie (Chris) Christensen of Shallowater, Texas.

He was a proud grandfather to Andrea (Russell), Andrew (Taylor), Cadence (Rashaun), Jazmin (John), Gracelynn, Dustin, Brittany (Eean), Katie (Patrick), Madelyn, Malachi, Cyrus, Jericho, Killian. His legacy continues through his great-grandchildren: Jaxxon, Ace, Malachi, Mya, Everleigh, Paisyn, and Briella. Larry is also survived by his sister Verda (Gene) Dent, his special friend Karen Wenke, numerous in-laws and many nieces, nephews, and close family friends. He also opened his heart and home to Cecilia Cortez, Mary Valdez, Christian Froman, and Destinee Ybarra who were family to him. He was always opening his heart to those in need. His loyal dogs—Ruger, Bea, Paisley, Chewey, and his cherished companion Ozzi—were also part of his extended family.

Larry was united in marriage in 1980 to the love of his life, Cheryl Gaskill, and together they raised their family in Ordway. He is preceded in death by Cheryl, his mother, Thelma Miller Cullum, stepfather Guy Miller, twin sisters Marian and Maryann, and his granddaughter Jozlin Altamirano.

Throughout his life, Larry dedicated himself to serving his community. He worked as a patrol sergeant in Fowler, Colorado, and retired from the Colorado Department of Corrections as a Lieutenant, Armor Locksmith, and K9 handler and a member of S.O.R.T. Team. Larry was also a member of the Emergency Response Team and served as a team commander. Most recently, he was a Deputy at the Crowley County Sheriff’s Office, where his commitment, strength, and compassion made him truly exceptional.

Larry found joy in simple pleasures—he was known for his fondness for squirrels, even hand-feeding those around the Sheriff’s Office. He enjoyed hunting in his younger years, cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs, and dining at the Cracker Barrel. Sweet tea, movie nights with his grandchildren and son-in-law, and the pride he took in his 1973 orange VW Bug brought him happiness. To the people of Ordway, Larry was affectionately known as “Papa,” a title he wore with pride.

Larry’s greatest love was his family, and his memory will live through the stories, laughter, and traditions shared by those who knew him. We sincerely thank everyone for their love, prayers, and support during this difficult time. His impact on our community and the lives of his family and friends will be forever treasured.

A visitation will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, July 16, 2026 at the River of Life Church in Ordway, followed by a Celebration of Life at 11:00 A.M. A reception will take place after the services. We invite all who knew Larry to join us in honoring his remarkable life and legacy.
