In addition to engine crews, hand crews, heavy equipment operators, and aviation resources, personnel assigned a "lookouts" play a critical role on the #GoldMountainFire. A lookout's sole responsibility is to continuously observe the fire, surrounding terrain, and changing weather conditions. From a strategic vantage point with the best possible view, they monitor fire behavior, identify emerging hazards, and provide early warning to firefighters if conditions begin to change.

As the fire moves across steep, rugged terrain, lookouts communicate critical information to firefighters working on the ground, including:
 
- Changes in fire behavior or direction
- Wind shifts and approaching thunderstorms
- Spot fires outside the main perimeter
- Aircraft activity and coordination
- Hazards that could threaten firefighter safety
 
Lookouts are a key part of the wildland firefighting safety system known as LCES—Lookouts, Communications, Escape Routes, and Safety Zones. Before firefighters engage a fire, they establish these four components to help ensure everyone can work safely and react quickly if conditions change.
 
On the Gold Mountain Fire, lookouts serve as the incident's extra set of eyes, helping crews make informed decisions and safely adapt to changing conditions. Their vigilance plays a vital role in protecting both firefighters and the public.
