Two HAZMAT Semi-Trucks Crash in Weld County, Hydrochloric Acid Leak Contained

HAZMAT Troopers Called For Two-Semi Collision

(Weld County, Colorado) – This morning, at about 12:45 a.m., Colorado State Patrol troopers were notified of a crash involving two HAZMAT semi-trucks located at Weld County Road 66 and Weld County Road 43, northeast of Greeley, Weld County, Colorado.

This crash involved two vehicles: an International Harvester hauling a trailer with hydrochloric acid, and a Kenworth hauling a trailer with natural gas. The International Harvester was eastbound on Weld County Road 66 when it stopped at a stop sign. The Kenworth was southbound on Weld County Road 43 traveling through the intersection (no stop sign this direction) when the International Harvester proceeded through the intersection into the Kenworth’s path of travel. The Kenworth collided its front with the left side of the trailer of the International Harvester, overturning the trailer into an irrigation ditch on the south side of the roadway. 

The overturned trailer began to leak the hydrochloric acid it was hauling. Colorado State Patrol HAZMAT units were called to the scene, as well as the Eaton Fire Department for the leak. It was determined an outer pipe had been split, and units were able to contain the hydrochloric acid. It is unknown at this time the amount that escaped.

The two drivers of the semi-trucks, a 54-year-old male out of Denver, Colorado, who was in the International Harvester, and a 71-year-old male out of Firestone, Colorado, who was in the Kenworth, did not suffer any injuries as a result of the crash. The 54-year-old male received a citation for failing to yield right of way when proceeding through a stop sign.

The intersection, along with adjacent intersections in each direction along Weld County Roads 66 and 43, has been closed for investigators to complete the crash investigation.
