Obituary

Raymond “Papa” Coffee of Olney Spring passed away at his home on July 27, 2026 at the age of 85 surrounded by his family. Ray was born in Springer, NM to Glenn and Oletta Coffee. When he was in junior high school his family moved to Cañon City and He washed the bottles for the dairies in Cañon City. After school Ray went to work on the harvest in the wheat fields from Texas to Canada. He also worked and owned body shop. After that he worked in Climax as a molybdenum miner. He then went back to Cañon City and worked at the state prison before becoming a bus driver for Trailways until they sold out to Greyhound. He then started driving semitrucks before driving the school bus for Crowley County in his retirement.

Ray met Kay Hill in the drugstore in Cañon City where she worked at the soda counter. On October 21, 1960 they married in Pueblo. They moved to Crowley County in 1991 when Ray went to work for the prison.

Ray loved his family and always kept the go karts, motorcycles and golf carts running for the grandchildren. He also loved to restore and rebuild classic tractors. Ray enjoyed mechanics and tinkering with things in his shop and painting vehicles for his friends and family . He also enjoyed reading western books.

Ray is survived by his wife of 65 years Kay Coffee, 4 children: Michael Coffee of MO, Darrin Coffee of Pueblo, Sandra Valdez of Pueblo, Russell Coffee of Olney Springs, 11 grandchildren: Andrew Valdez, Keri Coffee, Jeremy Valdez, Kadie Valdez, Brandon Valdez, Cheyenne Hintz, Joseph Coffee, Kasey Driskell, Chance Coffee, Gage Coffee, Daryan Coffee, 16 great-grandchildren, 3 siblings: Elaine Brady of Cañon City, Larry Coffee of Montrose, Debbie Burke of Denver. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Sonny Coffee, sister Glenna Coffee.

Bellwood Ustick Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
