DRIVER OF STOLEN VEHICLE SHOOTS AT POLICE, RESULTS IN PIT AND ARREST
On August 7, 2026, at approximately 1:07 a.m., Pueblo Police officers were responding to an unrelated call for service when they observed a stolen Hyundai Accent near East 1st Street and Norwood Avenue. The vehicle had triggered multiple Automatic License Plate Reader (ALPR) alerts throughout the shift and was easily identifiable due to its missing front bumper. Dispatch confirmed the vehicle was reported stolen in the City of Pueblo.
As officers attempted to contact the vehicle, the driver immediately fled, reversing at a high rate of speed, losing control, and blowing out a tire. Despite the damage, the suspect continued traveling westbound through residential streets. During the attempted escape, the suspect fired several gunshot rounds at responding patrol units, striking at least one marked police vehicle and an unoccupied parked car.
Given the imminent danger to officers and the community, authorization was granted for a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT). Officers successfully executed the PIT near East 4th Street and Erie Avenue, bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop.
The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Adonis Ortiz Lopez, was taken into custody safely without further incident. The firearm used to shoot at officers was recovered at the scene.
Ortiz Lopez appeared to be sweating heavily and informed officers he had ingested a small bag containing narcotics. He was transported to a local hospital for medical monitoring.
Ortiz Lopez was found to have four felony warrants and two misdemeanor warrants totaling $91,000 in bonds, primarily related to Motor Vehicle Theft and narcotics offenses. After receiving a medical clearance, he will be booked into the Pueblo County Detention Center on charges including two counts of Attempted First-Degree Homicide, Motor Vehicle Theft, Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender, Reckless Endangerment, Criminal Mischief, and Felony Eluding.
