Pueblo Public Health Warns Residents to Avoid Arkansas River After Sewage Spill

Description: Pueblo public health officials are urging people to avoid fishing, kayaking and swimming in the Arkansas River downstream from a sewage spill through Monday, Aug. 31.

PUEBLO, Colo. — August 27, 2026 — The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment is advising the public to temporarily avoid recreational activities in a portion of the Arkansas River following a discharge of untreated sewage.

According to Public Health, the spill occurred near the wastewater treatment plant on Stockyard Road, east and downstream of Confluence Park in Pueblo.

Officials are encouraging people to avoid fishing, kayaking, swimming and other activities that could involve contact with river water downstream from the spill through Monday, August 31, 2026.

The advisory applies to areas of the Arkansas River downstream from the wastewater treatment plant while officials address concerns associated with the untreated sewage discharge.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow the public health advisory and avoid contact with the affected river water until the recommended period has ended.
