Labor Day Rescue: Crews Responded to Woman Experiencing Medical Emergency in Withers Canyon

LA JUNTA, Colo. — Sept. 7, 2026 — The La Junta Fire Department and several partner agencies conducted a search and rescue operation in Withers Canyon south of La Junta on Labor Day after a woman experienced medical issues.

LJFD crews responded to the canyon and worked with assisting agencies to locate and help the woman.

The Otero County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control Engine 34, Lifeline and Piñon Canyon Fire Department assisted with the rescue operation.

The La Junta Fire Department thanked the responding agencies for their assistance.

No additional information regarding the woman’s condition or the circumstances of the rescue was immediately released.
