CPW recovers body of missing boater following overnight search at LPSP
PUEBLO, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife recovered the body of a missing boater early Monday following an overnight search at Lake Pueblo State Park.
Members of CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team located the individual at approximately 2 a.m. using towable side-scan sonar in the main channel just east of Peck Creek Cove in approximately 48 feet of water. CPW recovered the individual at approximately 2:45 a.m. with the assistance of a remotely operated vehicle. The ROV is an underwater robot.
The individual was turned over to the Pueblo County Coroner’s Office for official identification and determination of the cause and manner of death. CPW is investigating the incident as a fatal boating accident.
The incident was initially reported at approximately 5:30 p.m. Sunday. CPW officers immediately responded and began searching the west-central portion of the reservoir near Peck Creek using a sonar-equipped patrol boat.
Pueblo County Sheriff’s Office divers and Pueblo West Fire Department personnel assisted with the search. CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team and its remotely operated vehicle joined the search at approximately 6:30 p.m. The search continued into the early morning hours.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the individual who died in this tragic incident,” said Lake Pueblo State Park Manager Joseph Stadterman, who also is a member of CPW’s Marine Evidence Recovery Team. “We are grateful to our partner agencies and everyone who worked through the night during this difficult recovery.”
The incident remains under investigation. The Pueblo County Coroner’s Office will release the identity of the deceased.
