Obituary

Melbra “Mel” Bryant, 84, a former railroad engineer, member of the National Guard, and longtime resident of La Junta, transitioned on June 10, 2024 at his La Junta home. He was born October 17, 1939 in Moro, Arkansas to Jasper, Sr. & Bertha (Cupp) Bryant.

Melbra was profoundly known once he established his residence in La Junta. He began his early years in Colorado as a fireman and servicing trains for the railroad in 1958 and the following years. Mel then soon became a member of the La Junta Elks Lodge, where he would find his forever friends.

La Junta Elks Lodge was where Mel spent most days, conversing his history and giving lectures in a chair that was designated upon his arrival. He routinely greeted everyone with his witty remarks as he stepped through the door, but followed with a welcoming hug.

His other home was the Elks. His most gratifying memories had taken place there, and he knew how to make every occasion memorable. Mel celebrated birthdays, attended several meetings, and contributed to donations to his community. His involvement with the Elks lead to a very social life, and others had adapted to his routines and schedule as he was always punctual. You were able to find him on the patio in his chair cross legged, smoking his cigar, and chuckling with a neighbor. From his devotion as a member, he was shown appreciation with an honorable award of “Elk of the Year” in 2020-2021.

With his years dedicated to the railroad, he was enthralled by trains. Any picture, sculpture, or model gave enlightenment to his days after he had retired. Each train that he had collected through his years held a memory, and there was always a significant story to tell behind each one.

Melbra also took frequent trips to Laughlin, Nevada where he would return with souvenirs for family and friends. His gesture of love was shown through his findings in other towns, and gifting festive cards fitting to one’s character. With his exquisite signature, he dated the top of each card as another tribute to his preciseness. Melbra was finely cleaned up for each outing, and is remembered by his timely lifestyle.

As a father, brother, friend, and grandparent he enjoyed quality time and conversation. His personality was comical and ornery, but created relationships of fidelity. Along with his entertaining persona, he enjoyed colorful hats family members would make him for each of his birthdays, unique party sunglasses, and he was always picture ready with peace signed fingers behind someone’s head. His love for jokes and having fun kept him young at heart. He attended many family reunions and showed his support for other special gatherings over the years. Melbra always exhibited his generosity and thoughtfulness to others near or far.

Melbra is survived by his children, Virginia Cowell of La Junta, CO; Chele Herrera of Minneapolis, MN; sisters Ruth Hines and Phyllis Bates; grandchildren Angel Cowell, JoVonna Cram, Jacob Pattison, Monica Hamilton, Natasha Hamilton, Daniel Steele, Melbra Orr; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents; Jasper Sr. & Bertha Bryant, siblings Jasper Bryant, Jr, Raymond Bryant, Billy Bryant, William Bryant, Albert Bryant, Eugene Bryant, Gilbert Bryant, JC Bryant, Christine Chapman, and Sue Bryant.

A Celebration of Mel’s life will be held Friday, June 21, 2024, at 10:00 a.m., at Peacock Memorial Chapel in La Junta with Pastor John Dell of First Christian Church of Rocky Ford officiating. Proceeding gathering will be held at La Junta Elks Lodge in La Junta; 119 Colorado Ave.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the La Junta Elks at 119 Colorado Ave.; La Junta, CO 81050 direct or through the funeral home.
