UPDATE: Morning Fatal Crash on Highway 9 Closes Road

Road is closed at Highway 9 and Ute in Summit County

(Summit County, COLO) - The initial investigation of the fatal crash on Highway 9 on January 6, 2026, shows that a Dodge Dakota pickup truck was traveling northbound, while a Ford F350 was traveling southbound on Highway 9. The Dodge lost control and began to rotate into the southbound lane. The Ford collided with the passenger side of the Dodge, causing both vehicles to rotate off the right side of the road.

The driver of the Dodge, a single occupant, was a 21-year-old male from Aurora, CO. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford, a single occupant, was a 32 year-old male out of Silverthorne, CO. This driver suffered moderate injuries.

This investigation is ongoing and the cause has not been determined at this time. The Summit County Coroner’s Office will identify the deceased driver once proper next of kin notifications have been made. The highway was reopened yesterday around 11:15 a.m.
