Obituary
Leno, the sixth of 12 children of Marcos Trinidad Avila and Carmen Montez Avila, was born in Las Animas, Colorado and died in Seattle, Washington. Leno is survived by his wife, Carolyn Rose- Avila, daughter, Aviva Rose-Avila, and son Kimbo Tenorio. He is survived by siblings: Maria "The General" Boswell, Santa Maria, CA; Princess C. Montpelier, Bennington, Vermont; Tencha Avila, Santa Fe, NM; Mano Avila, San Antonio, TX; Roberta Avila, Biloxi, MS; and Michael Avila, Haymarket, VA, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Leno was the kind of person who changed every room, every movement, and every life he touched with fierce compassion and unwavering love. He dedicated his life to fighting the death penalty, defending human rights, and building a more peaceful and humane world - not for recognition, but because his passionate love for others was who he was.
His legacy lives on in every act of courage, every life spared, every voice raised for justice, and every person who learned from his example that love must be put into action. We are forever better because Leno was here, and we will carry his spirit forward in this fight with the same tenderness, humor, and humanity he brought to all of us.
Rest in power, dear friend, brother, uncle, and cousin. We miss you terribly, and we promise to keep marching on with you in our hearts.
Tribute by Abe Bonowitz, executive director of Death Penalty in Action and longtime friend whom Leno mentored in his social justice work.
